Fontodi

The name Fontodi comes from the Latin "Fons- odi" and dates back to Roman times since when vines have been cultivated in this region. Additionally sixteenth century documents providing evidence of vinification on the holdings and farm of "Case Via" have recently been found. From the beginning of the nineteen hundreds the wines of Fontodi have been exported all over the world, receiving many awards for their quality at important exhibitions. The Manetti family, who originate from the Chianti region, have been devoted to the production of traditional terracotta for over three centuries. In 1968 the family bought Fontodi and ever since has endeavoured to improve methods of production and to acquire new sites.

The vineyards at Fontodi, comprising of 67 hectares, are wholly situated in the valley of the Conca D'oro (the Golden Basin) which lies to the south of the town of Panzano and has an average altitude of 400m above sea level. The southern aspect of the vineyards and their position in a natural amphitheatre provide optimum climatic conditions to achieve perfect ripening for the grapes and therefore wines of great character and structure. The natural marl soil ensures perfect drainage and the roots of the vines grow down deeply encouraging the absorption of the minerals needed for their metabolism.

In 1998 Fontodi built a modern cellar designed with the aim of achieving wines of even greater quality by managing the vinification more carefully. Particular attention has been paid to the building to ensure that it sympathetically blends into the surrounding countryside.
